During her interview with Maurice Benard on his State of Mind YouTube series, Laura admitted that her divorce from her husband John Wright was one of the most painful periods of her life. She admitted that she was a very different person then. She said, “I was very much in a victim state of mind. I had to learn to let that go and realize that didn’t serve me or them [her kids] and it was going to keep me on the hamster wheel of pain. And to say, I am not a victim. Every choice I have ever made has brought me to this moment. Take responsibility for where you stand and then let’s move forward.”

When asked how it all began to play out, Laura admitted that the foundation of her marriage began to crumble. She said, “It was like watching a 5-year-old child lose her mind. A severe temper tantrum but as an adult woman. So I had to die, that version of me had to die, for me to be reborn as who I am now. And then when I finally let go, stopped running from the pain, and witnessed what was happening and accepted it…then it all started falling into place.”

The actress added, “I was gonna force it no matter what to where it was gonna kill me. And it almost did. When I finally let go and stopped running from the pain and witnessed what was happening and accepted it, then it all started to fall into place.”

In 2023, Laura also said that her divorce made her feel “shameful.” She told Soap Opera Digest in 2017, “I really saw life through different eyes. I’m a totally different person today, as I should be. I was ashamed that I was getting divorced, ashamed that my marriage didn’t work out, ashamed that I didn’t know if I’d ever be wanted again. I had this blanket of shame over me and now, the blanket’s off. I’m proud and happy about who I am — and my flaws! I have them. And guess what? So does everybody else! It makes us human.”
