Prince Edward and Sophie Step In for King Charles on Major Overseas Trip

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are going to be stepping in for His Majesty King Charles at a very important international event. Not only that, the King’s youngest brother and his wife will spend roughly two weeks in September touring the Pacific and Asia. Here’s what the diplomatic visits entail.

Prince Edward and Sophie To Represent the King and Great Britain

Prince Edward, joined by his wife, Sophie, will be visiting Japan and Papua New Guinea between September 14 to September 22. The trip will officially kick off with the most important leg of their diplomatic visits and see Edward serve as King Charles’ representative in Papua New Guinea, as the island country celebrates its independence golden jubilee.

The service will celebrate half a century of independence from Australia, with Edward’s presence serving to affirm the positive relations currently enjoyed by the country, which became a Commonwealth realm in 1975, and the British monarchy.

Edward and Sophie’s visit is one that’s looked forward to by the peoples of Papua New Guinea, with the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Justin Wayne Tkatchenko, confirming that the royals will be present in Port Moresby to officiate the country’s 50th Independence celebrations.

“We look forward to the upcoming royal visit, which will be a defining moment in our golden jubilee celebrations,” he said.

The minister also paid tribute to the king “whose steadfast leadership as sovereign of the United Kingdom and head of the Commonwealth continues to inspire unity peace, and goodwill among all member nations, including Papua New Guinea.”

Some of the things the Duke will take part in during his time on the island include being a part of a sunrise flag ceremony and attending an official state banquet that honors the anniversary. He will also be expected to present medals to Papua New Guineans who have delivered exceptional service to their nation.

Standing in for the King, Edward will further bestow new Regimental Colours upon the First Royal Pacific Islands Regiment.

After Papua New Guinea, Edward will travel to Japan for a five-day visit from September 18 to September 22. The visit will also mark the first major royal trip in that region in a number of years.

Edward has been standing in for His Majesty at important events this year, including attending the funeral of former US president Jimmy Carter in Washington in January 2025 and the inauguration of new Pope Leo in May.
