Doria Ragland and her husband Thomas Markle Sr. welcomed their child, Meghan Markle, back in 1981. Together, the family lived in Los Angeles. But unfortunately, Thomas and Doria’s union only lasted a few short years. They separated in 1981 and finalized their divorce in 19871.
While Doria was definitely there during Meghan’s toddler years, a lot of royal fans have noticed that she seemed to have gone missing throughout Meghan’s elementary, middle and high school years. Those were the years that the future Duchess of Sussex spent with her father Thomas and the Markle family. In fact, Thomas says that he was instrumental in helping kick start Meghan’s career by helping her land a small role on General Hospital. He also helped pay for her private school and college tuition.
While there was some speculation among royal pundits in the British media that Doria Ragland was arrested and sent to jail for drug charges, that has never been confirmed. In fact, there is no proof that Doria has any kind of criminal record from the past.

Despite all of the harassment by the British media and the paparazzi, Doria has continued her work as a social worker and yoga instructor. She also helps out Harry and Meghan with their two children, Archie and Lilbet, as a hands-on grandmother.

Doria has said, “That really broke my heart because I knew that it was bad. … That’s not an easy one for a mom to hear. [She was] just constantly be picked at by these vultures just picking away at her spirit. She “actually think[ing] of not wanting to be here.”
