Meghan Markle’s Designer Drama: Furious Phone Call, Embarrassing Mix-Up & Fashion Snub

Meghan Markle reportedly refused to wear Roland Mouret's designs after an embarrassing palace mix-up. Now the fashion designer is revealing what happened behind the scenes.

Meghan Markle's Designer Drama: Furious Phone Call, Embarrassing Mix-Up & Fashion Snub

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the UK, Meghan reportedly began looking for British fashion brands that would be happy to dress her.

As Meghan and Harry’s first joint UK outing made headlines, reports suggested that some prominent fashion brands were wary of dressing the Duchess because of her controversial public image.

There’s also the fact that Meghan has faced years of unfavorable publicity and criticism, although public opinion about the Duchess of Sussex remains divided.

However, a few years earlier, it was a different world altogether.

In his memoir, I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World, the fashion designer recounted his experiences with the Duchess of Sussex.

Key Takeaways

  • Meghan reportedly clashed with Roland Mouret.
  • A palace stylist mix-up caused embarrassment.
  • Meghan threatened to stop wearing his designs.
  • Mouret later spotted a cheaper imitation.
  • The designer and Duchess eventually reconnected.

Roland Mouret Says a Member of His Team Left Meghan Markle Embarrassed by Doing This

Popular fashion designer Roland Mouret opened up about his working experiences with the Duchess of Sussex in his new memoir.

Mouret, who was one of the first designers to start dressing Meghan, recalled reaching out to the Duchess when she had just started dating Prince Harry in 2016.

Knowing there would be a number of events lined up for the then-actress, Mouret offered to send a selection of dresses from his collection.

The Duchess was reportedly ecstatic about the offer, replying, “Yes, please.”

Mouret explained that he had instructed a member of his team to send the dresses to the palace and allow Meghan to keep them for as long as she needed, without following up or discussing the arrangement.

When the time came to collect the dresses, however, a member of Mouret’s team reached out to the Princess of Wales’ stylist instead.

According to Mouret, the employee had been trying to be efficient and contacted Kate Middleton’s stylist at Kensington Palace to arrange for Meghan’s dresses to be returned.

Meghan was reportedly furious and called the designer directly, telling him he had embarrassed her.

Mouret then tried to soothe her by apologizing and explaining that it was an innocent mistake made by someone who didn’t understand the importance of keeping the arrangement private.

However, Meghan reportedly declared that she could never wear his clothes again.

Mouret admitted he didn’t understand the logic behind her decision but chose not to question it.

He also made it clear that the decision was Meghan’s alone, rather than something imposed by the palace.

In his view, nobody else was particularly concerned about whether Meghan continued wearing his designs.

The incident is particularly interesting considering Meghan Markle’s long history of making headlines with her fashion choices.

Her clothing has frequently attracted attention, whether she’s wearing luxury designer labels or more affordable high-street brands.

Roland Mouret Describes How Meghan Wore a “Cheap” Version of His Design After Swearing Off His Brand

Despite this bump in the road, Mouret and Meghan would reconnect later.

The designer recalled seeing a picture of Meghan wearing what he described as a cheap high-street imitation of one of his designs.

Mouret found the situation rather ridiculous.

After all, if Meghan refused to wear his clothes because of their disagreement, why would she wear a less expensive copy of something he’d created?

He contacted her and encouraged her to return to his designs.

According to Mouret, Meghan responded positively and suggested they meet again.

Of course, Meghan’s relationship with designer clothing has been a subject of royal commentary for years.

The Mouret disagreement also wasn’t necessarily permanent.

Meghan went on to wear his creations on several high-profile occasions, including during her time as a working royal.

She was even pictured wearing one of his navy dresses in promotional material for her lifestyle brand in 2026.

That suggests the pair eventually managed to put their disagreement behind them.

Annemarie’s Take

I find this whole story rather amusing.

Imagine telling a designer you can never wear his clothes again because someone on his team made an embarrassing phone call!

I can understand Meghan wanting privacy, especially when she was first dating Harry, but Mouret seems to have been genuinely apologetic.

And the fact that she later wore a cheaper version of one of his designs makes the situation even more interesting.

Of course, Meghan has faced criticism over other embarrassing publicity moments, including a recent controversy surrounding a cooking video for her lifestyle brand.

But what really catches my attention is that Mouret apparently didn’t think anyone else cared whether she wore his clothes.

Perhaps this was a much bigger issue for Meghan than it was for anyone else!

Do you think Meghan overreacted to the stylist mix-up, or was she justified in being upset about her privacy?
