Can Donald Trump Wearing Blue To The Pope’s Funeral Be Explained?

Donald Trump, alongside lots of other prominent international figures, attended the funeral of Pope Francis this weekend. Many people are up in arms because he wore blue instead of black, a rather more traditional attire for such solemn events. However, could any explanations indicate that he didn’t disrespect the deceased and the Vatican?

The Blue Suit Causes An Uproar

TMZ and other media outlets covered the story of President Donald Trump’s blue suit. Many people complained on social media about a perceived lack of respect for Pope Francis and the Catholic Church. Conversely, some argued that wearing black wasn’t essential because the president is not Catholic.

because the president is not Catholic.

The argument raged, and continues, over the choice of color. Not only did others wear blue, but it seems that Trump’s was a lighter shade of blue than theirs. Meanwhile, others noted that the current president wore “black” to “Jimmy Carter’s funeral.”

In response, the outlet cited the White House rep as saying:

The President and First Lady honored the life and service of Pope Francis, and those who try to distract from that should be ashamed of themselves.

Could The Blue Suit Be Explained?

Colors long fascinated people, and blue is actually an important color. Of course, there’s no way of knowing if any deep thought went into Donald Trump choosing the color for the funeral. But, it is interesting that the colour blue is tied to the Virgin Mary and Christianity itself,” per Art UK.

The website explained that the color blue has deep roots in religious tradition, notably in the Old Testament. There, blue tassels served as a visual reminder for Israelites to “remember the Lord’s commandments.” The connection extends into Christianity, where the Virgin Mary, described as “the handmaid of the Lord,” is often associated with blue.

The color “blue attests to the divinity of Christianity,” with Mary being a key figure embodying this. In fact, the article explained that “the colour blue also represents spirituality and religion more broadly,” appearing in various other faiths as well. Notably, it is a color revered in Islam.

Other Ties To The Color

In psychology, colors are seen as important, and that dates way back to the ancient Egyptians. Did you know that they often used blue paint in rooms, which was believed to help dissipate pain.

Unika Vaeve reported that in modern-day psychology, “Researchers such as Ali and Gerard…found that red is stimulating and blue is calming. Studies have also shown that warm colors in general are stimulating, and cool colors are calming.”

Then there are some interesting interpretations of color, and the spiritual and cultural meaning. According to Larkin Mortuary:

Universal symbolic patterns, frequently incorporate color to convey complex meanings. The archetype of the wise old man, often associated with blue, evokes wisdom and tranquility. The shadow archetype, frequently linked with black, represents the unknown and the unconscious.

[…] Donald Trump has always held optimistic views about a lot of things, but perhaps openly declaring he fits the criteria to become the Pope – and on top of that, is he even a Catholic? – might just be one of those that top the list. […]
