The return of another beloved character, who was part of multiple major storylines in the 1980s, is back for another visit.
Tricia Cast (Nina Webster) is the only actor to ever play this role. She debuted in 1986, was pregnant, and had her baby (Ronan Malloy, last played by Jeff Branson in 2012) stolen.
Nina’s next great drama soon followed, which connects to a secret that Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) just uncovered. His discovery that John Abbott (Jerry Douglas) made a loan to Katherine’s husband, Phillip Chancellor II (Donnelly Rhodes), that was seemingly never paid back tees up a tale that reaches across half a century.
Cooper is arguably considered to be the greatest actor in Y&R’s cast. There are worthwhile mentions that can also be made for multiple other actors who’ve been part of the show that debuted in 1973, as this is a fully subjective analysis.
Katherine’s tumultuous marriage to what was her second husband established one of this soap opera’s greatest feuds. Jill Foster (originally played by Brenda Dickson) first appeared during Y&R’s first season. The manicurist formed a bond with Katherine and became her seeming confidant.
However, Jill became involved in a relationship with Phillip, who fell in love with her. Katherine’s battle with alcohol led to great drama and tragedy, as Phillip’s announced plan to divorce her and marry Jill, who was pregnant with his child, led to a purposeful car accident where Cooper’s character intended to kill herself and her husband.
Phillip didn’t survive the accident, and Jill gave birth to Phillip Chancellor III (Thom Bierdz). The friendship was finished, which allowed Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) to replace Jill as Katherine’s true confidant by the early 1980s. Cooper’s character taught Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) new wife how to succeed in GC society circles, with Nikki being today’s Grande Dame.
Nina’s entry storyline was comparable to Jill’s. She didn’t come from money but ingratiated herself with the right people.
As the years passed and Phillip III was SORAS’d (soap opera rapid aging syndrome), he became involved with Nina. Katherine and Jill despised her and worked together to try and make Cast’s character leave town, which didn’t happen.
Phillip III and Nina had a son, Phillip Chancellor IV (last played by Conner Floyd). Current viewers are most familiar with him because he was killed last summer during Cane Ashby’s (Billy Flynn) grandiose scheme in France. That happened at a chateau he inherited through his late father, Colin Atkinson (Tristan Rogers), who was last married to Jill.
Katherine’s importance in GC is so significant that her name has been routinely mentioned in dialogue since Cooper died in 2013.
Establishing shots, after the opening credits and coming out of commercials, along with scenes in all seasons of the year, are set in Chancellor Park, which was obviously named in her honor. Chancellor Park Cafe was opened in the past few years, and it is often used as a setting where many characters meet.
Cast has been a recurring player in recent years. She’s a writer who lives in California, but has returned when historically related developments happen, which the unresolved Abbott-Chancellor loan surely qualifies as.
