Ryan Paevey shares that he now alternates between Cassius and Nathan based on who is aware of the truth.
This week, the truth finally fell into place as General Hospital ceased to sidestep it and acknowledged what had been lurking just below the surface. “Nathan” is not actually Nathan-he is Cassius Faison, the fourth branch of a family tree that has never been straightforward.
The revelation didn’t come with an elaborate speech or a villainous monologue; it simply occurred, and suddenly every quirky moment Nathan experienced began to make a different kind of sense.
Now, Ryan Paevey is starting to discuss what happens when the man beneath realizes he may not want to remove it at all.
Paevey discussed with Soap Opera Digest the delicate balance he had to strike while the show kept its secrets hidden-for several months, the directive was straightforward: “Just be Nathan.” No alternate version of him, no subtle hints, nothing that could give the audience an early clue.
This required him to restrain Cassius almost completely, even when it might have been simpler to reveal a bit. “I would inquire, ‘Should I sprinkle a little bit of Cassius in here?’ And the response was consistently, ‘No, just be Nathan,'” he shared; it came out a slightly rougher “Nathan minus Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms).”
Now that the secret is revealed, he’s finally embodying the man beneath the surface, and the transition is subtle. “Now it’s, ‘You’re just Cassius unless people call you Nathan, and then you simply act like Nathan,’” he explained.
Two personas, one face, and he shifts between them based on who is observing.
What began as a tactic evolved into something more; adopting Nathan’s identity provided Cassius with access, safety, and a means to navigate without attracting attention.
It was intended to be a temporary solution, or so he thought-however, even Paevey noted that something shifted once Cassius became comfortable in that role.
“It’s incredibly advantageous to be someone that everyone adores,” he remarked, explaining why the identity was so effective from the start.
What he didn’t anticipate was how profoundly different it felt to truly inhabit it; Paevey likened it to a “Grinch story,” stating, “Everyone adored Nathan, and Cassius has never felt that before.” The longer he immerses himself in Nathan’s world, the more challenging it becomes to step away; “I don’t want to return to being myself.
This is better,” Paevey added-in the end, Paevey concluded, “This was the character I returned to portray.
