The Young and the Restless Star Peter Bergman Recalls The Time He Needed A Break From The Show

The Young and the Restless Spoilers Monday, October 28: Nikki Worries About Jack’s Sobriety, Christine Saves Daniel--For Now

The Young and the Restless fans know that Genoa City just wouldn’t be the same without Jack Abbott, and that is probably why his portrayer, Peter Bergman, decided to come back after a short stint away from the show.

In fact, Bergman recently opened up to Soap Opera Digest about the reason why he took a break from The Young and the Restless.

According to the publication, Bergman had to take some personal time off because he was diagnosed with a detached retina that required emergency surgery and some recovery time, too.

The actor said that he realized something wasn’t right when he went to visit his family in San Luis Obispo back in 2021.

Bergman recalled, “On the way, there was a funny thing on the inside corner of my left eye, but I didn’t mention it to my wife or anybody. All evening long, I was seeing something creeping into my vision and by the end of that night, it was like a curtain closing in toward the center of my eye.”

Bergman says that the next morning, things got significantly worse. He and his family returned to Los Angeles before undergoing his procedure.

Bergman further explained, “I called Th Young and the Restless and told them what was going on. They wished me well and everybody in the company wrote to me, which was lovely and made me feel very special. Everyone was asking for updates on me.”

However, Bergman adds that the recovery was a challenge for him and that’s because he has to keep his face parallel to the floor out of ever hour for more than a week.

Thankfully, Bergman could count on his The Young and the Restless co-star Mishael Morgan, who also had a similar operation. He said, “I had a very valuable chat with Mishael on my second day of recovery. I’m not a big phone talker but I got as much information as I could possibly get from her about what to expect. She was fantastic.”

I have been watching Peter Bergman since he was Cliff Warner on AMC . I truly love him as Jack Abbot on Y&R. He is a great actor and he brightens my day when I watch him. He works well with Susan Walters (Diane), Eileen Davidson (Ashley ) and Beth Maitland ( Traci) as well as Eric Braeden (Victor )and Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) . He brings a classy elegant style to the role and I think a bit of rascal charm.
