Prince William Learnt This Lesson From His Parents’ Marriage Mistakes

For the first time in forever, Prince William has decided to get up close and personal. And when I say up close and personal, I’m talking about the kind of up close and personal where you feel that you relate to a person’s story and purpose.

His candid chat with Eugene Levy on The Reluctant Traveler contains a lot of information that serves to give us a candid glance at the man who is soon to become the King of Great Britain.

One of his most revealing moments was when he talked about how his parents’ divorce affected his decision making process, both as a father and as a husband.

Prince William Reflects On the Importance of “Security” In A Home

Apparently Prince William learned a lot from his past, so it’s safe to say that he’s past the point of repeating it. By “past” I mean the sad divorce of his parents. However, instead of letting this tragedy rule his life or define him, he decided to turn it into a life lesson that will guide his footsteps.

“I think it’s really important that that atmosphere is created at home. You have to have that warmth, that feeling of safety, security, love,” he told Levy.

“That all has to be there, and that was certainly part of my childhood,” William recalled of his parents’ marriage. “My parents got divorced at 8, so that lasted a short period of time.”

King Charles and the late Princess Diana’s fallout was a very public and somewhat messy one, with accusations of infidelity flying around.

So when it came to creating his own family, William was very deliberate on his choice partner.

“You take that and you learn from it and you try and make sure you don’t do the same mistakes as your parent,” the dad of three said, adding, “I think we all try and do that and I just want to do what’s best for my children, but I know that the drama and the stress when you’re small really affects you when you’re older.”

Prince William Opens Up About Protecting His Family From Intense Media Scrutiny

One of the downsides to growing up as a member of the Royal Family, especially if you’re in the senior royal lane, is that you’ll pretty much have the media on you since the moment you were born.

Growing up in the spotlight, convinced William that tackling this would lead to a happier family life for him, his wife and three young children.

“Growing up, I saw that with my parents. The media were so insatiable back then. It’s hard to think of it now, but they were much more insatiable,” he explained. “They wanted every bit of detail they could absorb, and they were in everything, literally everywhere. They would know things, they’d be everywhere.”

He added: “If you let that creep in, the damage it can do to your family life is something that I vowed would never happen to my family. And so, I take a very strong line about where I think that line is and those who overstep it, I’ll fight against.”
