General Hospital fans know that Maurice Benard is basically the face of the hit ABC soap. As mob boss Sonny Corinthos, he rules the streets of Port Charles and makes sure that everyone knows it, too. But with that said, he did hint earlier this year that he was thinking about leaving his daytime television career behind, much to the shock of his fans everywhere. This has even prompted a lot of fans to wonder if he will stay or if he will go in 2023. Here’s what you need to know.
General Hospital Spoilers: Will Maurice Benard Stay Or Will He Go In 2023?
In April, Maurice dropped a bombshell about his future as Sonny. He said that he couldn’t help but feel “waves” about his career. He said, “Acting isn’t what it was when I was young. Sometimes it’s difficult, and it hits me in places… that I don’t like, like ugh. I’m at a point in my life where I don’t want the extra pressure, extra stress” of being in charge. It’s too much for me.”
However, he also did add, “If I ever left, I want to bring State of Mind [to] a place where I can make a good enough living to just do this. There’s less pressure here for me, and I can still work with the mental health. But acting, I don’t know when, but soon enough, I’ll be done with. Sorry. I hate to say that, but it’s the truth.”
General Hospital Spoilers: What’s Next For Sonny?
In October and while on Good Morning America, Maurice talked about his battle with bipolar disorder. He said, “I was 21 when I started; I had my first nervous breakdown and was in a mental institution, strapped down to a bed. At that time, I had a lot of bad thoughts and I was thinking, you know, like, how do I get out of here? And I knew that there was a reason. And then I got General Hospital and I played a character with bipolar. Then I did a book about my mental health and now I’m doing a show called State of Mind about mental health and I know because when I was in the at period in the mental institution, I knew there was a reason why I was doing this, why I was there. I knew deep down inside there was a reason, and it’s for me to help other people with mental illness.”
