The letter Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) left in his motel room for Phyllis was gooey. It read like one a high school student would write to his sweetheart because it was very emotional.
Phyllis was devastated that Matt said he left town with Patty Williams (Stacy Haiduk). Viewers, along with Mr. Kitty, have been privy to Patty’s inner thoughts. She told the well-made plush toy that Matt was still useful.
Patty put her pet cat in a box and dropped it at the foot of the Abbott mansion driveway. The Abbott’s maid, Mrs. Martinez (no actor currently playing this unseen role), who hasn’t been seen in years and is only referenced in dialogue, put the box on the famous family dining room table.
Okay, so it’s time to fire Mrs. Martinez or at least give her a week off without pay. Why would she facilitate Patty’s delivery knowing that woman tried to recently kill her boss and his wife?
Plus, Mrs. Martinez certainly knew about all the other things Patty did to the family who employs her in recent years.
The above can be called a minor plot hole because it doesn’t make sense. Viewers can also assume that Diane likely told Mrs. Martinez to toss the gift box and fake cat in the Abbotts’ outdoor trash container.
A maid who might have trained at the Mrs. Martinez school allowed someone she never met into Matt’s room. Who does that?
But that’s how Phyllis gained entry into her latest love interest’s now-former temporary home. The housekeeping staffer didn’t speak to Phyllis because actors who say at least one line make more money than those who are only in the scene but not heard.
So, Phyllis was allowed into Matt’s room and eventually found the envelope he left for her with a handwritten note inside. He decided to leave Genoa City, Wisconsin, with Patty.
But Matt stopped at, where else, Crimson Lights. The audience had to suspect that Patty was nearby while he did so, potentially unknowingly part of Matt’s baited plan to have her captured.
Jack and Diane are begging for a break, so they shouldn’t choose to dismiss Phyllis, who is serious about helping them. She wants to rid GC of Patty’s villainous stench just like they do.
Matt and Phyllis shared a stream-of-consciousness plan, which would have included him giving her the Heimlich maneuver at the Genoa City Athletic Club’s generally serene dining room. But he ditched the plan at the last minute after having Patty get in his head.
Helping the Newmans and Abbotts capture Patty would be an undeniable win for Matt. Here’s hoping he achieves it and isn’t hurt or killed in the process, because death has been known to follow where Mr. Kitty’s owner goes.
