She didn’t expect to fall for anyone, specifically a guy who committed a heinous crime against a woman who stunningly became a confident, Sharon Newman (Sharon Case).
The belief that Matt has changed, which is shared by Sharon, is the driver in this storyline.
Phyllis sees herself as sharing a similar backstory to Matt. She’s committed crimes, including trying to kill two people, Christine Romalotti (Lauralee Bell) and Paul Williams (Doug Davidson), many years ago. So, Phyllis’ belief in Matt makes soapy sense.
Matt needs to break the hold Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) has on him. He realizes that the Moustache isn’t someone who will ever believe that his debt to the Newman family has been repaid.
Victor allowing him to have lived on the Ranch was purposeful, rather than compassionate. Braeden’s character never intended to do anything more than use Matt as a weapon against Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn).
Having made friends with one of the woman, Phyllis, who knocked him unconscious, with the other being his ex-wife, Sienna Bacall (Tamara Braun), was a desperate move.
Matt needed to believe that someone was in this comeback fight with him, and who better than the Phoenix.
Phyllis’ ability to survive is remarkable. She’s also rebuilt her life on multiple occasions, much to the chagrin of multiple Genoa City, Wisconsin, residents who were certain she couldn’t rebound.
The Grand Phoenix disappeared as a Y&R setting after Phyllis sold it to Lily Winters (Christel Khalil), who heads Winters Incorporated.
But it served as Phyllis’ comeback vehicle after the character Stafford plays reappeared in Las Vegas, Nevada, and spotted Adam Newman (Mark Grossman), who had amnesia, was a professional poker player, and called himself Spider.
Four years later, Phyllis is the owner of Arabesque. Victor’s backhanded gift is a shell of the company that Cane and his later father, Colin Atkinson (Tristan Rogers), envisioned as the future titan of GC.
Matt has come to see Phyllis as someone he can trust. She’s already given him a job as her right-hand man at Arabesque and is, in effect, his girlfriend.
Patty wants to mine Matt’s negative feelings about Victor, who is the reason why she returned to town. She did Victor’s bidding, successfully splitting Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and Diane Jenkins Abbott (Susan Walters).
But the Abbotts are back together, and Patty is in jail. Victor clearly doesn’t care as she’s destined to remain behind bars for years.
Assuming another escape doesn’t happen, she could use Matt and vice versa. He needs to be careful because those who have been allied with Patty generally don’t do well or sometimes perish.
