Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn) is family. No matter their divorces or the feelings of betrayal that ensued, they’re tied through the twins. That means he’s connected to Lily forever.
Devon Winters (Bryton James) had an epiphany. Dominic Winters’ (Ethan Ray Clark) kidnapping eventually led to Devon blaming himself, rather than Mariah Copeland (Camry Grimes), for what happened. That’s very selfless, as is his choice to build a new college that focuses on the arts.
Meanwhile, Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) has been toying with the idea of a form of vanguard surgery that could allow his hand to be repaired. What had previously been out of the question is no longer impossible, though he’s not guaranteed success because the medical procedure is emerging.
Devon is a good soul who really got down on himself when he decided that Dom’s abduction was his fault. That’s not true, as his wife, Lily, Nate, and most importantly, Mariah, have repeatedly told him.
Devoted viewers know that Dom is in the world because Mariah and Devon were willing volunteers during the period when the then-Abby Newman Chancellor (Melissa Ordway) was married to Chance Chancellor (Connor Floyd).
They couldn’t have children, so Mariah agreed to be a surrogate, Devon became a donor, and Chance was killed last summer during Cane’s ill-fated event in France.
Time has allowed everyone to forgive Mariah, who was enduring a severe mental health crisis which was triggered by an encounter with someone who reminded her of Ian Ward (Ray Wise).
But Devon hasn’t forgiven himself, and he decided to do more with his inheritance by using some of his grandmother’s (Katherine Chancellor, Jeanne Cooper) funds to create a new college that would make his and Lily’s late father, Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John), proud.
The unexpected exits of Devon and Nate leave Lily two people down at Winters Incorporated. But she isn’t concerned.
This helps to explain why the writing staff had Cane offer Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) a job. Lily raised her always excellent eyebrows when her ex-husband made that announcement, with viewers seeing why that plot piece was positioned weeks ago.
Cane has already benefited immensely from Lily’s change of heart about him. Now, rather than simply running Chancellor for her, he will be her right-hand man, and that should bode well for their romantic reunion. An emphasis on the word should in the last sentence is needed.
Devon was the reason why Nate can no longer perform surgery. That dates back to the storyline where Dominic’s character became involved with Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy) while she was with Devon.
A confrontation happened at the Top of the Towers, and Nate fell to the ground after being punched by Devon. His hand has been rendered useless for performing surgery ever since.
Dr. Stephanie Simmons’ (Vivica A. Fox) return to Genoa City, Wisconsin, and new prominent position at GC Memorial facilitated the introduction of Nate’s new option.
It would be a miracle if his hand surgery allows him to resume his seemingly lost vocation, but realized dreams are part of what daytime has long been about.
