After first planning to use her access to Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) as trade bait with Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), she now sees romantic potential.
Viewers recall that Victor was negotiating with Phyllis, who remarkably was able to seize control of Newman Enterprises and hold it for a matter of weeks. He forced her to return it to him, but added a surprise.
Phyllis acted on compassionate impulse and, along with Matt, saved Nick Newman’s (Joshua Morrow) life after he overdosed. That caused Victor to give the remnants of Arabesque to Phyllis as an appreciative gesture.
Soap is soap. That well-worn phrase was in play during the short period when Phyllis’ oil-based painting replaced Victor’s in the Newman Towers’ executive suite.
The sight of Phyllis running the company Victor founded more than fifty years ago in Y&R’s timeline was fantastical.
Backhanded credit was offered by various residents of Genoa City, Wisconsin, but her children weren’t on board.
That element of the storyline was believable. Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei) was disgusted that his mother stole Victor’s life’s work.
An off-screen Summer Newman (last played by Allison Lanier) cut her mother off, despite Phyllis rebranding the corporation as Summers Conglomerate.
People are no longer shocked to see Matt’s face. That alone represents progress since Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) saw him at The Shadow Room’s original edition in Los Angeles, California.
Fantastical can also be used to describe all impacted parties coming to grips with Matt’s presence in their GC lives, and it being a quarter-century since they last saw him. But Victor’s measured acceptance of Matt’s claimed redemption is real.
Currently, he’s working for Victor, who wants him to cozy up to Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn).
The plan is to have Matt relay useful information about Cane, whom Victor intends to punish for having introduced the artificial intelligence tool. That’s rich because Victor’s mishandling of it became the real problem.
What better way to maintain the spotlight than by becoming a couple with Matt?
This projected pairing will set people off and naturally be condemned. However, it makes soapy sense because both characters are outsiders whose commonalities are creating a mutual attraction.
For his part, Matt has been extraordinarily forgiving. Phyllis knocked him unconscious to prevent an exit during the point in the plot when she was still using him as leverage.
Phyllis has a pattern of explosive relationships with many men. Viewers can imagine a near future where Matt asks Nick for advice about how to handle Phyllis, with Howarth’s character becoming even more sympathetic.
