Meanwhile, Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) crossed what for him was a soapy Rubicon. Phyllis Summers’ (Michelle Stafford) stole Newman Enterprises from him, and he was unable to prove it.
So, after weeks of negotiations, he let her off the hook because she agreed to return the company to him in exchange for Christine Romalotti (Lauralee Bell) dropping the serious criminal charges against her.
The Newman family, with Nikki conspicuously absent at the Ranch, celebrated with champagne. The highly irregular run of a thief Chief Executive Officer in the form of Phyllis is over, and the one and only Victor Newman is back at the helm.
A simple answer could be offered in one word. Yes.
However, kudos is owed to Stafford, who remains one of the brightest talents in all of daytime. She is such a great actor that any storyline, no matter how impossible, becomes possible because of her sheer force of will.
Phyllis is supremely resourceful, as devoted fans know. She was able to separate Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian) from his true love, Christine, all those years ago, which sparked the rivalry that has bled through the post-Newman Enterprises deal confrontation Phyllis had with Bell’s character at the Genoa City Athletic Club.
However, the real answer is also one word. No. Stafford’s talent made this plot possible, and it realized its fitting climax because of her specific performance.
Victor has broken up with Nikki many times, but they’ve resolved their disputes, though sometimes it took years to heal mutually. So, he’s been thinking, in the back of his mind, that they’ve been in a breakup period that can end if she comes to her senses.
However, he’s not been aware of his true love’s increasingly scary health malady. Viewers don’t yet know what her ailment is, but something is definitely wrong, and as Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) senses, it goes beyond a migraine induced by stress.
With Newman Enterprises back in his legal grip, Victor can turn his attention to the rift with Nikki. Of course, he still believes that she’s wronged him by siding with his nemesis, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman).
For all that Victor says about Jack, he doesn’t actually feel superior to him. He feels inferior because Jack is able to relate to Nikki in a way that Victor never has.
There is no doubt that Nikki’s deepest love is Victor. But there have been places in her heart for other men, with Jack continuing to occupy a sizable space.
She could plausibly divorce Victor again and remarry Jack if his marriage to Diane Jenkins Abbott (Susan Walters) is irreconcilable.
So, viewers will be watching to see if Victor can reconcile his jealousy for Jack once both men know that Nikki has a serious and as yet undiagnosed health issue.
