Being drawn to trouble is what caught his eye when Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn) was getting into it with Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) in the main dining room at the facility he owns. But the Genoa City Athletic Club wasn’t the only famous setting where Matt tried to get his bearings.
Seeing him at Crimson Lights, the origin setting for this character, was apropos. Running into Patty was good fortune for daytime fans as well.
Matt brutally attacked the then Sharon Collins (Sharon Case) decades ago, before she and Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) were together. Their relationship dynamic was established when he defended Sharon’s honor and became Matt’s rival.
The character Howarth is portraying became the first in a series of villains who targeted Sharon, with Cameron Kirsten (Linden Ashby) likely being the most complete comparable person. It feels like Matt is on the same trajectory as Cameron, who was killed by Sharon in defense of herself and her and Nick’s daughter, Faith Newman (Reylynn Caster).
Sharon has owned Crimson Lights for many years. So, it was fitting that Matt would be drawn to that location and also meet Patty there.
Patty is footloose and a fancy freeloader. She’s living off Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) dirty money, with fans rightly asking how the Moustache is still so well-heeled.
If the artificial intelligence program was so powerful and one that Victor used to wipe out Matt’s finances, then why wasn’t Phyllis able to do the same to the man whose company she stole?
Yes, Phyllis stole Newman Enterprises. But apparently Victor has money stashed in various holes around the world, which gave him the cash to pay Patty off.
That ill-gotten loot, which Patty recently thanked Victor for supplying in exchange for her dastardly pursuit of Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), is clearly fueling her existence in GC. It also gives her the perception of being impenetrable.
So, Matt wasn’t dead, and Patty obviously is alive and kicking dirt. Viewers also know that Ian Ward (Ray Wise), who was most recently paired with the departed Jordan Howard (Colleen Zenk), is not dead.
Devoted fans recall that Ian and Patty were connected when viewers last saw her. She was heading overseas at that time and surely would benefit from a rematch.
Accelerating this storyline with the surprise comeback of Ian would instantly supercharge the jolt that Matt’s reappearance is creating. It would also form a most unholy alliance and prove unmanageable for the good guys and ladies in GC.
