Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) made a reasonable request when he asked Eric when the line he’s designing will be ready to launch.
But McCook’s character reacted defensively, wouldn’t even provide an estimated time frame, and then questioned the cloth that was used to create a dress.
Donna Logan (Jennifer Gareis) is worried about Eric. She sees the increasing stress level he’s under after agreeing to be Logan’s lead designer and won’t allow his life to be threatened, regardless of his creative goals.
It would have been risky to simply be Katie’s mentor. That information would have eventually become public knowledge, or the top brass at Forrester Creations would have learned the truth.
Family conflict was always coming because Eric knew going to work for the competition was a purposeful payback play. Having his new outlet be Spencer Publications’ emerging fashion house set the soapy stage for emotional explosions.
Meanwhile, Donna has her own stress level to consider. She’s looking out for Eric while knowing that the inevitable blowout between Eric and Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) is inevitable.
Eric straight out told Katie and Bill that Ridge put him out to pasture. He was technically right, but now, in light of Eric’s seeming stress-related breathing issues, a fair question arises.
Was Ridge right to be concerned about his dad’s health and insist that not working every day was best?
In the short-term, Ridge was arguably on point. He wasn’t trying to force Eric out of the company that bears his last name, and he co-founded it with Ridge’s mother, Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery).
A reasonable case could also be made that Ridge wasn’t wrong to push the retirement party as soon as he did, rather than waiting for months or longer.
But private, one-on-one conversations could have been had before the party happened, because it went over badly and led directly to pushing hard to work for Katie.
Eric didn’t know how to handle feeling as though he was past his productive years. He is the living embodiment of all that FC has been and remains in today’s fashion world.
Yet, Eric’s admission to Donna about biting off more than he can chew is proof that Ridge’s concerns were justified. He’ll realize his son wasn’t making a power move or that Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) was disrespecting his ability.
Everyone wants Eric to be a vital part of the family and remain tied to the business indefinitely. But they also need to prevent him from pushing too hard because health issues have flared before and are reappearing now.
So, working less is likely a solution that’s coming. Whether it happens at FC or Logan can continue to be a juicy plot point.
