As viewers recall, Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn) had his minions at Arabesque, an intriguing company moniker to be sure, create a sinister computer program. Whoever possesses it has the ability to take control of any company in the soapy world.
Of course, this AI storyline follows a daytime tradition. The writers played off the prevailing fears that are being stoked throughout the media about doomsday scenarios involving this emerging machine-based tool.
There have long been people who lived in this famous Midwestern city who proclaimed that the sky is falling. They believed that certain events were going to doom the humanity that populated GC.
But those opinions have always been revealed as reactionary. No rational person denies that no new idea, product, or what have you, can create change in people’s lives, like Cane’s AI weapon.
However, people like Victor exploit the trepidation that people like Jack have. So, it was natural for Jack to believe that the Moustache would initially attack Jabot. That didn’t happen. Instead, he took out Arabesque.
Then, something unexpected happened. A resistance fighter, whose name is Nikki, decided to take a stand.
Such has often been the case in this soap-filled land, with fear-mongers being forced to change the subject and predict the next crisis that will radically change the world or even end it if their cries of repeated, arrogant outrage aren’t immediately acted upon.
Seasoned GC residents and viewers on the other side of the screen know that the doomsayers, like Victor and Cane, are merely trying to manipulate outcomes for their benefit.
Nikki loves her husband. But she also knows that Victor needs a guardrail. Yes, that’s a good term for sabotage.
Telling Jack that Victor has control of the AI tool was huge. Jack’s pronounced eyebrows raised when Nikki offered that admission. It came after he told her that Jabot was going dark as a preventative, defensive measure.
Jack must realize that Victor stands a great chance of learning that his wife willingly divulged a significant confidence, and that fallout is inevitable. That has to be a secondary consideration because protecting Nikki from Victor comes after ensuring Jabot survives.
Victor’s arrogance was reinforced when he took Cane down. There was never a doubt in his mind that the game would end with that outcome.
Jack has an advantage beyond the intel and preliminary offer that partnering with him provides. Victor is certain that he can crush Jack because of the power the AI tool offers. So, that makes Nikki’s intention to thwart her husband a real threat.
Jack might save Jabot without having to take it offline for as long as he anticipated. However, Nikki’s marriage will be endangered by the time the climax of this storyline is seen.
