Gwen Stefani Reveals the Unexpected ‘Third Party’ in Her Marriage

Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton may live much of their lives in the public eye, but when it comes to their marriage, they keep a special — and spiritual — third party involved at all times.

Appearing recently on The Drew Barrymore Show, Stefani, 55, opened up about the best piece of advice she’s ever received when it comes to love and commitment. “Best advice would probably be, make sure you have a third party,” she said, lifting her finger skyward in reference to God.

Faith has clearly been a steady force in Stefani and Shelton’s relationship. After meeting on The Voice in 2014 — during a period when both were navigating painful divorces — they formed a bond that led to dating by 2015 and culminated in a deeply personal wedding in July 2021 at Shelton’s Oklahoma ranch.

Cozy Nights In and Musical Collaborations

Their life together now, however, is a far cry from the spotlight-driven careers that first brought them fame. Stefani, the powerhouse behind hits like “Hollaback Girl” and “Don’t Speak,” shared that her idea of a perfect date night is simple: staying in. “I’m literally couch, blanket, cookies, chips,” she said, laughing.

She painted an endearing picture for Barrymore: two couches in their living room, dogs curled up nearby, and casual greetings across the room. “We have two couches … Blake’s on that couch and we’re like ‘Hi!’” Stefani said. “I would sit next to him, but he’s gigantic and we don’t fit anywhere.”

When Barrymore pushed for more rapid-fire answers, Stefani revealed another preference: “I think probably long strolls because I’m tired at that time. I’m so tired,” she said. “I love to be in bed early.”

Even though their musical roots are different — Stefani coming from ska-punk and pop, Shelton from country — their love story has been underscored by collaboration. Together, they’ve released heartfelt duets like “Nobody But You,” “Happy Anywhere,” “You Make It Feel Like Christmas,” and their latest, “Purple Irises,” featured on Stefani’s Bouquet album.

Last month, she also dropped a deluxe version of Bouquet, with a new song written alongside Finneas. “‘This song is about love,” Stefani said in a statement. “A love that can’t be broken, a love that no matter what is always going to be there, and a love that can always bring you back home.”

Shelton, for his part, is preparing to unveil his new project For Recreational Use Only next month, which includes a fresh duet with Stefani called “Hangin’ On.”

Prioritizing Family and Each Other

Family has been another major anchor for the couple. Stefani shares three sons — Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo — with her ex-husband Gavin Rossdale, and Shelton, though he doesn’t have biological children, has embraced his role as a stepfather wholeheartedly.

“Even though I’m a stepparent, I take that job very seriously,” Shelton told People magazine. “The kids see me as a very important person in their life.”

Reflecting on his decision to step back from The Voice after its 23rd season, Shelton added, “If I walked away from my career at this time, the only thing that I run the risk of is having regrets that I’m missing out on some more important things in life.

For now, that’s our kids. This isn’t about me anymore and never will be again.”

The love they share often spills onto social media as well. Earlier this year, Shelton posted a sweet tribute to Stefani on Valentine’s Day, writing on Instagram: “Happy Valentine’s Day to my forever Valentine. I love you @gwenstefani!!!!!”

Through music, faith, and a shared commitment to family, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton continue to show that even in the whirlwind of fame, true love is built on simple, steady foundations — and a little help from above.
