Lee Ji-eun, who is better known as her stage name, IU, has had quite the tragic life, despite all of her fame, forture and success in the K-Pop world.
Even though she is a seriously talented actress and singer who has managed to become known as Korea’s “little sister” thanks to her girl next door image, her life behind closed doors has been anything but glamorous.
IU was born on May 16, 1993, and her brother had to live apart from their parents. Instead, they lived with their grandmother in a studio apartment that could only be best described as extreme poverty. During this time, she had very little contact with her parents.
It’s been said that the one-room apartment was full of roaches. Eventually, they moved into a relative’s home but that didn’t make IU’s life any better. That’s because she was verbally abused by someone who was supposed to protect her.
If that weren’t enough, the relative wanted IU to quit her dream of becoming a famous actress and singer and instead told her to focus on her studies instead.
But, her problems didn’t end there. During one of her very first auditions, IU was scammed. An agency in South Korea managed to get her to send money in the hopes that she would get the training she needed to appear on Korean television.
Unfortunately, she lost all the money that her grandmother had saved up for their small family of three.
IU was not a very good student, either. She admitted early on that her grades were never good enough for her to go to college. However, the moment that she became famous, many colleges and universrtiies started reaching out to her. IU decided to stick with her acting and singing career instead.
IU has also had a very tough time with her health. She once fainted on stage and was hospitazlied. Back in 2014, she also suffered bulimia because she was supposedly obssesed with losing wright.
IU also lost three very good friends in her life: Sulli, Jonghyun and Goo Hara.
