Disney’s Little Mermaid Takes A Swipe At Kate Middleton: Critics Blame Meghan Markle

Is Disney creating their own little feud with the British Royal Family? That’s what some people seem to think as there’s a new report that suggests the new Little Mermaid movie takes a swipe at Kate Middleton. And no, this has nothing to do with Meghan Markle, if that’s what you’re thinking. At least not the real one. Keep reading below for everything you need to know.

According to Page Six, there seem to be a lot of people comparing the lead characters of Ariel and Prince Eric to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. And in one scene, it seems like Ariel takes a swipe at the Princess of Wales. One source close to the situation says, “Ariel has sacrificed her voice in order to get to the surface and [meet] Prince Eric. She can’t speak so he tries to guess her name. His first guess is Diana. His second guess is Catherine, but after [Ariel gives a disgusted] reaction, he [concludes] ‘OK, definitely not Catherine.’”

But in insider also said, “Disney would be disingenuous to imply those name choices were coincidental.” 

Of course, it didn’t take very long for both fans and critics alike to weigh in on the matter. Many of them took to social media to write comments such as, “What a great message for Disney to put out there to kids. Did the actress work with Meghan to perfect the right face of ‘bitter cause I’ll never be a real Princess?’” along with, “Wow, they are taking a huge gamble. If true, many people will not take their kids to see it. I’m really surprised by this. She has always behaved impeccably and has never been rude to anyone.  Hardly a good example for children.”

Is Disney Creating Another Royal Feud?

Another critic wrote, “How incredibly tacky. A movie billed as women empowering denigrating another woman for choosing a path different than your own.”

And then there was this comment, too: “Oh, come on! That’s just pure coincidence, no question about that. Ariel pulling a disgusted face at the name Catherine is just simply her making funny exaggerated faces every time her name’s guessed incorrectly. That’s got nothing to do with the Princess of Wales AT ALL.”
