The Young and the Restless star Michelle Stafford (Phyllis Summers) once said that before she made it big in the soap world, the modeling world had rejected her because of her weight. Here’s what you need to know.
In an interview with Soap Opera Digest all the way back in 1995, Michelle told the publication that before she made it as an actress, she tried her hand in the modeling world. Unfortunately, not of the agencies wanted to sign her on and for an apparent reason, too.
Michelle said, “No one would touch me because I was carrying too much weight and I wasn’t the right look. I tried for a year and got nowhere.”
The actress said that at the time, she had developed a brain tumor. Her surgery prompted her to change her attitude about her life, her career, and what she wanted out of her future. She said, “I don’t want to sound glib, but it was a very good experience because it really kicked me in the butt. I went on a diet, started working out and dyed my hair red. Once I went red, compliments of Clairol, I got more modeling work.”
Before she knew it, Michelle started getting all of those offers from the modeling world that she was hoping for earlier. She recalled, “I was doing runway shows in Tokyo, Milan and Paris. It was really cool, but I didn’t appreciate it. Nothing is ever how you think it’s going to be — ever. My saying is, ‘The grass is always greener, then you get over there and you realize it’s Astroturf.”
Michelle also said that when she got her role as Phyllis Summers on The Young and the Restless all the way back in 1995, that moment changed her life forever. She said at the time, “I’m so happy to have a contract gig — I could stay on YOUNG AND RESTLESS forever. Wherever this gig takes me is where I’ll go. I’ve seen enough of the downside of this business. It’s nice to have the chance to do something I love. I’ve earned that!”
