Royal Family News: Prince Edward Finally Gets His Title On His 59th Birthday

It seems as though King Charles must be in a giving mood these days. Not only did he give the Sussex kids their royal titles on the official royal website, but it looks like he’s also given his little brother his official title, too. There are new reports that say Prince Edward has finally gotten his ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ title on his 59th birthday. It’s a move that some critics say was long overdue. Here’s what you need to know.

A statement from the palace reads as: “His Majesty the King has been pleased to confer the Dukedom of Edinburgh upon the Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Forfar, on the occasion of His Royal Highness’s 59th birthday. The title will be held by Prince Edward for His Royal Highness’s lifetime.”

It continued, “The Dukedom was last created for Prince Philip in 1947, upon his marriage to Princess Elizabeth, who held the title of Duchess of Edinburgh before acceding to the throne in 1952. The new Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are proud to continue Prince Philip’s legacy of promoting opportunities for young people of all backgrounds to reach their full potential.”

Clearly, both Edward and his wife Sophie have to be pretty excited and if not honored about the move, too. After all, they have always been considered as two of the hardest working members of the royal family. And of course, many royal fans sure do have a lot to say about the matter, too. Some have taken to social media to write, “Aww, Edward and Sophie must be so happy today. I bet they each put an extra lump of sugar in their tea,” along with, “ I think the title conferred to Edward today was to keep Edward from breaking ranks after the Sussex news – Charles’ attempt to steady his ship. DoE is a Scottish title. I wonder if Scotland becomes independent whether the title will still be valid? Curious.”

So far King Charles himself has not made any comments about the matter.
