She might be one of the biggest stars in the daytime television world, but there was a time in which she wished things looked different in her life. General Hospital actress Cassandra James recently opened up about how she got bullied when she decided to come out as trans. Here’s what she has to say.
Cassandra says that she was born in Vancouver to a white American father and a Chinese mother. She says that she had a difficult time getting along with her father but was always very close to her mother. Speaking to L.A. Blade in an interview, Cassandra puts it this way, “She was everything. My whole childhood, she was very protective of my femininity. She just allowed me to be feminine in my boyhood.”
However, Cassandra says that attending an all-boys school was very hard as she was often bullied by her peers. She recalled, “I was so physically abused. I got thrown into lockers and pushed, and my pencil cases got thrown out windows. There was so much name-calling. When I was eight years old, my friends came up to me and said, ‘We can’t be friends with you anymore because we get picked on when we are with you.’”
“I have so much empathy for my younger self,” the actress explained. “I was the only little girl wandering the halls of this all-boys school.”
Through therapy though, things got better and in November 2015, Cassandra came out as transgender. “It was so fascinating I didn’t even really use the word transgender,” she confided. “I used to do drag. I told my mom that Cassandra was going to be a part of my life forever and not just a character that I played.”
And the rest, as they say, is history, right? But in Cassandra’s case it’s daytime television history as she’s the first transgender actress to have a role on a major soap.
