Daytime Television Alum Alec Baldwin Reaches Settlement In ‘Rust’ Shooting

Multiple reports say that Alec Baldwin has reached a settlement with Halyna Hutchins’ family in the cinematographer’s fatal shooting on the set of the movie Rust back in October. The film is set to resume in January with Halyna’s widowed husband Matthew Hutcins set to executive produce. Here’s what you need to know.

Deadline says that Rust productions and Baldwin have reached a settlement with Halyna’s estate. This comes after a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against the actor and others, according to a statement released by the actor’s attorney. The lawsuit, filed in February in Santa Fe, against Baldwin, the film’s production companies, its producers and other key members of the crew, alleged numerous industry standard violations. Halyna Hutchins, 42, was killed when Baldwin fired a Colt .45 revolver that he had been told was “cold.” 

“We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed,” said Matthew Hutchins, husband of the late Halyna Hutchins said this morning.

“I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin),” Matthew Hutchins said in his statement. “All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work.”

Back in August, a forensic report by the FBI concluded that the shooting wouldn’t have happened without the pull of a trigger. The FBI’s conclusion does not align with Baldwin’s previous statement about the tragedy in which he says that he did not pull the trigger on the gun that killed Hutchins. Back in December, Baldwin, who held the gun in his hands, told ABC News in an interview, “The trigger wasn’t pulled. I didn’t pull the trigger. I would never point a gun at anyone and pull a trigger at them. Never.”

Yet, the FBI report states that the gun “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger.” With the hammer fully cocked, the report states that the gun “could not be made to fire without a pull of the trigger while the working internal components were intact and functional.”

The FBI made their conclusion while testing out a similar gun that Baldwin held that day. With that said, investigators are yet to receive any of the actor’s phone records, even though it’s been seven months since he turned his phone over to the Suffolk County Police Department in New York.
