The Young and the Restless star Michelle Stafford opens up about Diane Jenkins and her return to Genoa City and why her character Phyllis Summers is still very leery of her. Here’s what she has to say.
Speaking to Soap Opera Digest in a new interview, Michelle admits that at first she didn’t know who would be playing Diane Jenkins on the show. But when she found out that Susan Walter would be returning to reprise her role, she certainly got very excited. She told the publication, “I love everything about Susan. She’s just a good time. Now, I don’t want that to be misunderstood that I didn’t like Maura West by the way. I’ve experienced before, where I say I like something about people take it as I don’t like something else.”
That said, Michelle did admit that it’s been interesting to note that a lot of her character’s enemies also happen to be her romantic love rivals. She explained, “It’s very specific to me, as an actor, to be aware of all the different personalities of these women. I really never felt Phyllis hated Sharon. I felt Phyllis new that she had done Sharon wrong by sleeping with Nick, so Never felt there was hat there. But Diane is a different kind of jealousy. Phyllis hates Diane. She really gets to Phyllis and I fell she’s just at war with Diane. All Diane has to do is walk into the room and Phyllis comes undone.”
Michelle also said that Phyllis knows Diane has not changed one bit. She explained, “People don’t really change their spots. They grow, they mature, they get older and can have some sort of introspection on their life. You can change your ways and stop doing things that hurt people but people are still who they are.”
