Royal Insider Says Meghan Markle Doesn’t Owe Her Father Thomas Markle ‘Anything’

Meghan Markle is keeping things in the past. Even though her father Thomas Markle had suffered a stroke last week, one royal insider says that Meghan has no plans to extend an olive branch to her father anytime soon. Here’s what you need to know.

Royal Insider Says Meghan Markle Doesn’t Owe Her Father Thomas Markle ‘Anything’

The Duchess of Sussex has not spoken to her father ever since he failed to show up at her royal wedding back in 2018. And while Thomas was hospitalized last week as a result of his stroke, Meghan did not visit him. Instead, she flew to Uvalde, Texas to mourn the 21 people who lost their lives at a mass shooting at an elementary school. A lot of critics couldn’t believe that Meghan would snub her father in such a way, too.

In his new column for Yahoo UK, Omid clarified why the Duchess of Sussex cut off her father in the first place. He wrote, “Breaking away from a toxic parent is one of the most difficult decisions a child can make. But when that family member has a history of creating stress, anxiety and pain through abusive behavior and manipulative tactics, ending the relationship is often the only way to break the cycle….When Thomas responded to Meghan’s hand-written plea in late 2018 to stop airing their private business to the press, the solution he replied with was to stage a media-friendly photo call to show the world they have moved on. It was a suggestion that led Meghan to reluctantly acknowledge she was approaching the end of the road with her father.”

That said, Omid also added that Meghan doesn’t owe her father anything, even if some people believe that she could have made the effort to reach out to her father when he was in the hospital last week. Omid wrote, “For Thomas—who within 24 hours of being released from the hospital continued his tabloid chats—he plans to continue speaking out until he gets the attention from his daughter that he feels he deserves. But that’s where he’s wrong. After tireless and failed attempts to repair their relationship, Meghan doesn’t owe him a damn thing.”
