General Hospital spoilers say that there are going to be a lot of fans that won’t be very happy with what they are about to hear! Actor Maurice Benard, who has long played Sonny Corinthos on the hit ABC soap, has hinted that he might be ready to retire from the daytime television world. Say it isn’t so! Here’s what you need to know.
During a recent episode of his mental health series State of mind, Maurice suggested that he might be ready to leave the canvas sooner rather than later. In fact, it seems like retirement is on his mind more than anything else. “I’m really happy right now. If you know me, you know it’s in waves how happy I am on General Hospital. Up and down, up and down,” he said.
If that weren’t enough, Maurice also added, “Acting isn’t what it was when I was young. Sometimes it’s difficult and it hits me in places to act that I don’t like. But right now, I’m really happy on GH.”
It’s also interesting to note that Maurice will be celebrating his 30th anniversary on the show by next year. And because he’s already accomplished so much, he believes that this would be the best time for him to hang up his hat. “Soon enough, I’ll be done with it. Sorry. I hate to say that, but it’s the truth.”
As far as his post-General Hospital future is concerned, Maurice said, “I would want to bring this STATE OF MIND [show] in a place where I could make a good enough living to just do this.”
There’s no doubt that General Hospital fans are sure going to have a lot to say about this as Port Charles won’t be the same without Sonny Corinthos in it, right? That, and it’s probably safe to say that a lot of General Hospital fans wouldn’t want to see the character recasted as well. Don't leave us Sonny. ..Not now. Smike is driving me craaaazzzy! Especially WITHOUT Carly🤯. Get those two back together ASAP.
If the Sonny character has to continue on his present path, don't feel he would be missed much. After 30 years of portraying Sonny the so called mob boss, I''d hate for him to leave canvas in the state of mind he his now. He cannot accept his betrayal to family by siding with Nina in every situation and blaming Carly for their divorce.. A case of having the cake and eating it too. Not saying that Sonny has to continue being the big bad mob boss, but he needs to be written for differently if he is leaving canvas. As with Luke, I don't feel his retirement from canvas presented an entertaining end to such a long time on canvas. Whenever MB does decide to retire, I think a heck of a story line should be written for the two to say goodbye to canvas in a grand way. Just my opinion.

When Mike came on the scene the fans were not happy.
Mike was Maurice’s idea. He said He was tired of playing Sonny and Mike was more like him.
Maurice is a sensitive soul and when fans were negative about his performance, he had to defend Mike.
Sonny used to be a strong decisive mobster with a heart of gold. If Maurice doesn’t want to play Sonny any more maybe he should leave.
I’ve heard Maurice Bernard talk about retiring before on SofM. So I’m real surprised he is thinking of retiring and he is really into mental health and state of mine now. Nothing lasts 4-ever. So I would wish him well, He’s been on GH for 30 yrs, it’s his time now. I am wondering through where GH will go once Sonny is gone. Carly running the the Mob was pretty cool!! Time to hand over the reinstatement a woman??

He would be missed. I think the show is already hurting without Steve, I think if Maurice leaves it would really hurt GH. I don’t know if I would continue watching, I like Maurice and Steve so much, their friendship and bond on screen. Now that Steve is gone, Brick will never be his new right hand. Maurice needs to be the power house he can be on his own.Take control of the scenes more. No retirement Please!!
If he wants to retire I fully understand. but instead of possibly killing off his character ... why not recast him?
I've always loved sonny and would never have wanted him to leave if he was the old sonny. But the way he acts now, it wouldn't matter to me if he left the show.
Please rethink this for a little while longer. You are the show have been watching for almost as long as the show has been on.. Tap and watch every night .
I would hate to see him go. Just like Jason. I respect him working on a mental health show.
I really hope Maurice will change his mind because GH will never be the same without him and I think I will not watch the show anymore
